Denise Little

PG13- Twice Upon a Time (some v,slight x,probably not funny to younger age groups)

Introduction

Denise Little has edited at least three anthologies based on general themes, such as unusual adaptations of fairy tales, romantic fantasy, and sci-fi pets. Her ability to find some of the more creative stories helps make these anthologies interesting, but sometimes they also lack a consistant tone or sense of purpose. Mostly the books are light and entertaining, with surprising moments of darkness or serious social commentary.

Anthologies

Twice Upon a Time is a collection of fairy tales rewritten from perspectives other than the original, or with a "not quite ever-after" premise. Some of the stories are quite good, others mediocre, and I almost died when I saw the third remake of "Jack and the Beanstalk". Contributors include Jody Lynn Nye, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Esther Friesner, Jane Lindskold, Nancy Springer, Josepha Sherman, and Elizabeth Anne Scarborough. With a line-up like this, one would expect an excellent anthology, and indeed, some of the authors rise to the occassion. Basically, the prognosis is that, like most anthologies, this one suffers from being very good in places and mediocre in others. A little stronger hand during the editing process might have helped, but lovers of fairy tales probably won't mind the inconsistant tone.
